As the message says, this is an error reported by the XML
parser, which Saxon is simply passing on to the user. It generally means that
there is something at the given URL, but it isn't a well-formed XML document.
In fact, your description of the problem suggests that it isn't even meant to
be an XML document. To read non-XML into a stylesheet, use the unparsed-text()
function from within an XPath expression. You can either supply a dummy XML
document as the input on the command line, or use the -it option to start
execution at a named template, without a source
